He is a 24-year-old, college dropout that began learning and making a small living off WordPress gigs. He quickly absorbed as much information and as many development tutorials on the internet as I could, and is now a Programming Analyst at WalMart headquarters.

We’re thrilled Tate will be speaking at WordCamp Sacramento 2016 on Local WordPress Development with Docker!

Speaker Q&A With Tate

To help you learn even more about Tate, we asked him to answer a few questions for us — some WordPress-related, and some others we think you’ll appreciate 🙂 Be sure to give him a shout out on Twitter and don’t forget to use our hashtag #wcsac.

What inspired you to give this talk at WordCamp?

Most of the time, I feel inadequate or too young to talk to or lead tech communities, but when I saw a Tweet referencing the call for speakers, I was like, “Screw it! I’m gonna apply!”.

As for my topic, I have grown to love using Docker over the past year and a half. A blog post that I have written about integrating it into WordPress workflows seems to have been well read on the internet, so I was wanting to continue the conversation at a WordCamp.

How did you discover WordPress?

When I was a freshman in college, I had a clunky desktop computer that I installed Ubuntu server 10.04 on. I wanted to create and host my own personal website and was quickly suggested that I install WordPress. Needless to say, the rest is history.

How has WordPress Or WordCamp impacted you?

WordPress gave me an outlet to teach myself development and code. It was an easy route to becoming a full-fledged programmer. I most recently got a job as a programmer at WalMart headquarters and it is all because I started out with a few HTML and CSS tweaks on a very old WordPress theme.

How do you primarily work with WordPress?

I primarily focus on writing custom plugins and themes for freelance clients. I am most often asked to build application-like plugins that handle internal business solutions.

What does the WordCamp theme Discovery mean to you?

WordPress is a great way for others to discover the world of technology, development, design, and all things web. For me, personally, I like to come up with ways to stretch the capabilities of WordPress. I like to think about how some day there might be new ways of building websites discovered out of future versions of WordPress.

What is the latest book you read?

Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words by Randall Munroe.

What is your favorite restaurant? Favorite menu item?

The taqueria down the road… their tacos are the bomb.

What TV series are you current binging on/into?

What is Stranger Things?

What do you do for fun?

DIY farming, gardening, and general outdoor activities are my simple pleasures. I rock climb and occasionally hike when I can. I also am a part of a YouTube gaming channel for some extra fun here and there!

Get To Know Tate Barber Tate Barber is a developer, husband, and DIY farmer.
