We asked our speakers to name one WordPress-related beginner tool or resource they recommend to those looking to up their game.
When asked where to go to learn about WordPress, I always send beginners to the same four places: WP101 from Shawn Hesketh, the iThemes Training community, WordPress.tv, and WPBeginner.
Here are the tools and resources our speakers recommend:
- Bridget Willard: Desktop Server.
- Matt Vanderpol: WordPress Codex — There is a lot here both in the nature of “How To” articles and API documentation.
- Sallie Goetsch: Go to your local WordPress meetup. Beyond that, it depends a lot on whether you learn best by reading, video, or live courses. All are available.
- Mike Fitzpatrick: Beaver Builder.
- Andrew Taylor: wphierarchy.com/.
- Cat Scholz: Can I recommend my own e-courses? LOL! Otherwise, Google…
- Vasken Hauri: WP Debug Bar.
- Leslie Staller: dash.generalassemb.ly, an online free learn to code tutorial resource for html5, css3 and javascript.
- Jarrett Gucci: WP Beginner.
- Ben Byrne: Is WP Beginner too obvious a choice?
- Cory Miller: The WordPress tutorials hub at ithemes.com/tutorials.
- Dorothy Kern: A great social media plugin (I use Simple Share Buttons).
- Ivan Villa: Host with a company that specializes in WordPress hosting.
- Justin Sainton: WP101.
- Jen Miller: Yoast SEO WordPress plugin.
- Sarah Wefald: Other than WordPress meetups, I’d say tutorials online or on YouTube. It’s an invaluable way to get walked through a new coding technique.
- Amber Hewitt: WP Beginner.
- Kayla Butler: Plugin’s like MailMunch allow new beginners to design beautiful subscriber boxes and opt-in boxes for their WordPress website. It’s user friendly and for those who know nothing about coding.
- Justin Busa: The WP101 videos are a great resource for beginners.
- Adam W. Warner: Use Feedly and start reading every WordPress related blog you can find.
- Kim Shivler: I’m going to be selfish here, my site WhiteGloveWebTraining.com.
- Jonathan Trujillo: WP Beginner is pretty solid.
- Matt Cromwell: Facebook Groups like All About WordPress or WordPress for Beginners.
- Amanda McCoy: WPShout’s Up and Running course.
- Adam Silver: KitchenSinkWP.com — just sayin’.
- John Locke: The WordPress Codex is a great place to spend some time.
- Tessa Kriesel: Advanced Custom Fields — this really allowed me to learn the templating system and create a lot of awesome stuff.
- Treighton Mauldin: Timber.
- Heather Hogan: Jetpack WordPress plugin.
- Bill Conrad: WP101.
- Tanner Moushey: WordPress.tv.
