Brian Bourn is managing partner at Bourn Creative, a full-service design agency and Genesis recommended developer. He has been working with WordPress since 2009 and has created over 170 custom WordPress sites. With a passion for business, an eye for design, and a predilection for code, he provides consulting for small to medium-size businesses, works with clients around the globe on website strategy, and brings their vision to life through UX design and development. Brian is a big believer in giving back and supporting the WordPress project and community and volunteers his time as lead organizer for the monthly Sacramento WordPress Meetup.
We’re thrilled to have Brian onboard as a speaker at WordCamp Sacramento 2018 asked a few questions to help you get to know more about him. Check out our mini interview with Brian below:
What is the topic of your WordCamp talk?
Why do you think this is important?
Themes are the visual end of a website, shaping how it looks, the experience visitors have, and how it works. It’s important to understand what to look for when selecting a WordPress theme, as well as where to find quality themes, how to install a theme, and how the WordPress customizer works with a theme.
What’s your WordPress origin story?
I am a self-taught developer originally out of necessity. My wife owned a design agency, she designed and built WordPress websites for clients, and her development partner was becoming unreliable. I have a mechanical mind and in the past rebuilt cars and remodeled houses, and figured that learning to write code was probably very similar.
I dove deep into WordPress and PHP (around 2.8), and within five years, completely reinvented myself as a developer and left my full-time career to work with my wife and manage our growing our agency.
How has WordPress impacted your world?
WordPress has allowed me to help build and run a design and development agency that completely supports my family. It also allowed me to reinvent myself and change careers for more freedom and a better quality of life. Attending WordPress events across the country has also led to the development of friendships I value deeply.
