Jake is the President & Founder of 10up, a digital agency that finely crafts websites and tools for content creators, leveraging open platforms like WordPress. Whether you’re a political junky glued to FiveThirtyEight, a car enthusiast reading MotorTrend, a Windows user who keeps up with Microsoft’s newsroom, an Apple fan reading 9to5mac daily, or if you just use WordPress itself, you’ve experienced a sample of 10up’s work. Jake grew 10up from a 1 man show (himself!) to over 140 employees with dozens of brand name clients in 7 years. Jake started focusing on WordPress in 2006, releasing free plug-ins, building websites with it, and contributing core code. He has been a writer and expert reviewer for Smashing Magazine, taught WordPress engineering at Boston University, and has spoken at conferences, universities, and programs around the country. He helped organize the first WordCamp Boston in 2010, founded Rhode Island’s WordPress meet up, and rebooted the Sacramento meet up as it continues to this day. He is a core contributor to WordPress, and maintains some highly rated plug-ins with over 500,000 active installations.
We’re thrilled to have Jake onboard as a speaker at WordCamp Sacramento 2018 asked a few questions to help you get to know more about him. Check out our mini interview with Jake below:
What is the topic of your WordCamp talk?
Solving Content Reuse And Syndication
Why do you think this is important?
Increasingly, businesses own more than website, and content creators share and syndicate stories. (1) This talk introduces a solution that will help content managers and developers implement a streamlined, efficient workflow that saves them time and headaches. (2) There are negative SEO implications to reusing content if you’re not careful; we’ll address those.
What’s your WordPress origin story?
I started focusing on WordPress in 2006 while implementing a news feature for a small start up with a content publishing strategy. I was impressed with its agility as a platform, although it was still a reach to use it for more than simple news sites at the time. I found myself frequently implementing it as a blogging platform for non profits (integrating it with a non profit oriented CMS) between 2007-2008, and as the platform evolved into a much more sophisticated platform, began recommending it as a “full CMS” to some clients.
How has WordPress impacted your world?
I own a 140+ person agency that leverages WordPress as its content platform of choice, and was built and bootstrapped from day 1 on a reputation of being an elite WordPress engineering firm… so I’d say it’s had a transformative impact on my career.
