Jason Cosper gets paid to nerd out over WordPress and make it fast. No, really. TBH, it’s pretty nice work if you can get it. He also spends a ton of time with his wife Sarah and chihuahua, Gomez. Jason’s passions include hanging out in musty record stores, drinking whiskey, smoking meats, and sampling craft beers.
We’re thrilled to have Jason onboard as a speaker at WordCamp Sacramento 2018 asked a few questions to help you get to know more about him. Check out our mini interview with Jason below:
What is the topic of your WordCamp talk?
Why do you think this is important?
While there will probably always be space on the web for static pages, there’s been a definite uptick in businesses (and even regular people) trying to build Progressive Web Apps, aka PWAs (see: web pages that behave like apps), for themselves using headless WordPress and a JavaScript library like React. The problem is that badly built PWAs sometimes end up causing more problems (see: sluggishness) than they solve.
In this session, I’ll be introducing folks to Google’s PRPL (Push, Render, Pre-cache, Lazy load) pattern and give them tools that they can use on both their fancy PWA and standard WordPress sites to help speed things up.
What’s your WordPress origin story?
As someone who has been blogging since 2000, I tried a number of early platforms, including WordPress’ predecessor, b2. While I didn’t care for b2 at the time — and ended up staying on Blogger for a few more years — I decided to give it another try once I’d heard about the WordPress fork.
At that point, WordPress 1.5 had just shipped and I was getting tired of how stagnant Blogger had become after being bought by Google. So I switched my sites (a personal blog, and a t-shirt blog) over and never looked back.
How has WordPress impacted your world?
Being competent at WordPress paid for my wedding, bought me a house, and helped me provide for my family over the last 12 years. On top of all that, I’ve made dozens of friends and met countless wonderful people thanks to the community.
