Matt Vanderpol is a full stack developer with a primary focus on WordPress including custom theme/plugin development and performance review and improvement. With over 20 years as a developer in the industry, he has a strong focus on performance and process — always seeking new and better ways to accomplish a task both for the benefit of the designer/developer and for users or visitors. Matt lives in Nevada City, CA in a home that he and his wife designed and built. He works remotely from that home while enjoying a thriving family life with his wife and their 6 kids.
We’re thrilled to have Matt onboard as a speaker at WordCamp Sacramento 2018 asked a few questions to help you get to know more about him. Check out our mini interview with Matt below:
What is the topic of your WordCamp talk?
Leverage Linting To Be A Better Developer
Why do you think this is important?
Developing plugins and themes for WordPress can be challenging at times; we all run into edge cases and unexpected corners. Adding a linter to your development process standardizes your code and makes it easy to catch little things before they turn into big things later. This session will help you better understand the benefits of linting and how you can incorporate it into your development processes.
What’s your WordPress origin story?
I first started using WordPress in 2011 to provide a user friendly frontend for content capture. I was working with a custom PHP library for site generation at the time and we were able to leverage custom post types and custom fields for content maintainers to enter content in WordPress, then query the database from the PHP library to format and display page content. This gave us the robust tools that we were familiar with for creating site templates but made it easy for non-technical folks to enter and edit content.
How has WordPress impacted your world?
I use WordPress for both hosting my own blogs and for earning a living. A majority of my income for the last 6+ years has involved some kind of WordPress consulting or site build. In addition my wife uses WordPress to manage a website for a group of like-minded homeschoolers.
