Michael Helmke has been building custom websites and web applications for years and has recently discovered the joy of WordPress. His work centers around helping performing arts groups promote themselves, grow their audiences and increase donations. Michael enjoys helping clients translate big ideas into reality, and making sure the technology all runs smoothly. He is also a blogger, enjoys cooking, and sudden changes in weather.
We’re thrilled to have Michael onboard as a speaker at WordCamp Sacramento 2018 asked a few questions to help you get to know more about him. Check out our mini interview with Micahel below:
What is the topic of your WordCamp talk?
How To Properly Set And Use WordPress User Roles
Why do you think this is important?
Part of what makes WordPress such a great Content Management System is allowing multiple users to work on a site at the same time. The fact that you can have content contributors and editors working simultaneously enables very flexible ways of working. This session will help you understand why you would add multiple users and how to enable the right permissions on those users so they don’t step on each other’s toes.
What’s your WordPress origin story?
I started using WordPress in the last year after spending years building custom websites and custom web applications. It grew from saving a local non-profit’s ailing WordPress install and enjoying both the immense power and ease of use of WordPress as a publishing platform. From there I decided to build a business around it.
How has WordPress impacted your world?
WordPress lets me do a lot more for a lot less. Without hiring a designer, you can get a pretty good looking website set up to try out an experiment. You can host it anywhere for very little capital investment. And the amazing and generous user community demonstrates the true spirit of open source software.
