Natalie Bourn is currently a sophomore in high school. She’s been a WordPress blogger for four years and writes about adventures, life lessons, her journey through school and being a teenager, and her friends and family. She has recently started a YouTube channel sharing videos about her life and travels. When she’s not busy with homework and exploring with her family, she loves to dance and choreograph, read, write, and play with her brother.
We’re thrilled to have Natalie onboard as a speaker at WordCamp Sacramento 2018 asked a few questions to help you get to know more about her. Check out our mini interview with Natalie below:
What is the topic of your WordCamp talk?
How To Use The WordPress Editor
Why do you think this is important?
The WordPress Editor is where you work with your content and without content, you have no website. A lot of websites however don’t use all the tools at their disposal to format their content and design it in a way that’s easy to read because they just don’t know what tools they have access to and what the best practices are.
What’s your WordPress origin story?
I began blogging for fun when I was 10 years old to share the fun things I do with my family, inspiring quotes, and my thoughts about school and life.
Even though my parents own a design agency (Bourn Creative) and build custom WordPress websites for a living, they weren’t going to build one with me until I proved that I could stick with it. So I got started with a free theme on WordPress.com. After a year, I worked with my mom and dad (like a real client) to brand my blog and customize a theme to my own unique style. I exported all of my content from WordPress.com into my new self-hosted site and love it!
But to be honest, learning to use WordPress wasn’t easy and my parents made me learn all the things the same way anyone else would. Today, I’m happy my dad does the maintenance for me and I just get to focus on creating new blog posts.
How has WordPress impacted your world?
WordPress has helped my parents build a successful business that allows my family to take A LOT of amazing vacations and go on A LOT of awesome road trips. It has helped me find my own voice, share my thoughts, and from attending WordCamps, I have met a lot of really nice people and made new friends. I even spoke at my first WordCamp in San Diego earlier this year on starting a blog and finding your voice and my session was packed with standing room only! It was so awesome!
