What is the topic of your WordCamp talk?

Dealing With Problem Clients: Fencing In The Friendly Monsters

Why do you think this is important?

Every WordPress pro who is working with clients has encountered a bad one. (or two, or eight). Bad clients can make your live miserable and even make you consider throwing in the towel. Bad clients can never be completely avoided, but there are practical steps you can take in your business to recognize them early and insulate yourself from the impact of the ones who slip through. We’ll talk through these priorities, identify five client “monsters,” and explain the strategies you can use to contain them.

What’s your WordPress origin story?

I built and sold my first website in 1995. Over the years, I’ve used most of the popular web technologies in my work. I’m embarrassed to say that initially in 2008 I perceived WordPress as a threat to my business. I resisted (foolishly) for a couple of years until I was finally won over, and changed my whole business model to be WordPress focused. Since 2010, I’ve been all in for WordPress and the incomparable community behind it.

How has WordPress impacted your world?

WordPress has empowered me to build a profitable business doing client work. In 2012, I became a WordPress educator, teaching users around the world on iThemes Training. I also have the privilege of traveling internationally to speak to groups about the business of WordPress. I’m incredibly grateful for the software and the community that has made this possible.
